Mythic Entertainment announced today that "Bitter Rivals," the Warhammer Online in-game event designed to introduce the world to the new Slayer and Choppa classes, has begun. The "Bitter Rivals" event is the first portion of "A Call to Arms," a series of content rollouts that Mythic is calling a "live content expansion." "Bitter Rivals" will introduce a new RvR Scenario, a ruined Chaos Temple in which the two sides will battle for the right to get early access to their side's new career first. More details on "Bitter Rivals" and "A Call to Arms" can be found in our exclusive interview with Jeff Hickman. The big prize for winning "Bitter Rivals," of course, is getting to be the first to play the game's two new classes. The Orc Choppa is a melee DPS class meant to represent the "rank and file" orc that just like to hit stuff until it stops moving. It was also one of the two classes that were cut prior to the game's release. You can check out our exclusive Choppa playtest here. The Dwarf Slayer, on the other hand, is a replacement for the Hammerer class that the developers at Mythic were apparently never happy with in pre-release testing, and instead replaced with the very iconic orange-mohawked dwarf berserker.
Last month, THQ announced that it would be laying off a quarter of its global work force, more than 600 workers. Today the publisher shed a little more light on where those layoffs were coming from, announcing that it had laid off 86 employees from developer Volition's quality-assurance staff. Red Faction: Guerrilla will be the next Volition game to hit shelves. The layoffs hit Volition's Champaign, Illinois QA facility, which is not far from Volition's Champaign, Illinois headquarters. That QA location will eventually be closed, with 16 employees transferring to Volition proper. A THQ representative stressed that the core development team of 236 employees at Volition--best known for its Saints Row and Red Faction franchises--will remain untouched.
Activision is currently riding high off the success of World of Warcraft--and Call of Duty--and Guitar Hero isn't doing bad, either. This list could go on, but suffice it to say that as of the publisher's most recent financial disclosure, Activision Blizzard had a cool $3 billion in its coffers, just waiting for a rainy day and a fire sale on one of its one-time competitors. Mike Griffith Speaking to the Bloomberg news service yesterday, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith reiterated that his company is keeping an eye out for potential acquisition targets. "The combination of Activision holding a fair amount of cash and presumably prices being depressed, not only for publicly traded companies, but also likely for new intellectual property licensing rights, should certainly create opportunities," he said.
In January, Ubisoft attached a March release window to the PC edition of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, the much-anticipated follow-up to the original real-time strategy game from Massive Entertainment. However, the French company's announcement came with some confusion, given that no mention was made of the expected Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game. Today, Ubisoft's silence on the matter came into focus when the publisher confirmed that it currently has no plans to release a console edition of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. "World of Conflict: Soviet Assault will be released for the PC later this month," an Ubisoft representative told GameSpot. "A console version of World in Conflict is not planned for release at this time."
Brain-eating zombies are often given a bad rap--on account of the brain eating, and all--but never let it be said that good work hasn't been done in their name. Today, Capcom, in partnership with the American Red Cross, said that it would be marking the March 13 launch of Resident Evil 5 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a blood drive.
